After Cuffed, with his marriage in limbo and his mental health in decline, Nic disappears for a while before Consumed starts nearly a year later in Serbia. Nic has moved through security careers, eventually landing in a Balkan anti-trafficking organization. He is still a mess, descending deeper into alcoholism, and not living well when a familiar face infiltrates the organization in an attempt to bring Nic home. When that friend is gravely wounded in action, Nic snaps out of it and realizes his efforts to protect his friends from his damage have actually made things worse.
